Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis. It is sometimes called degenerative joint disease. This “wear and tear” arthritis frequently occurs in the knees.
The cartilage within a joint begins to break down and the underlying bone begins to change. These changes usually develop slowly and get worse over time. Osteoarthritis can cause pain, stiffness, and swelling, and can result in disability.

hyaluronic acid injections

Viscosupplementation is a medical procedure during which lubricating fluid is injected into a joint. Also called hyaluronic acid injections or hyaluronan injections, viscosupplementation is most commonly used to treat symptoms of symptoms of knee osteoarthritis. Hyaluronic acid is a key component of the joint fluid in healthy joints, but is found in lower concentrations in osteoarthritic joint patients. By adding hyaluronic acid to the existing joint fluid of an osteoarthritic knee, the goal is to:
  • Facilitates better knee movement
  • Reduces pain
  • Slows osteoarthritis progression
  • Keeps bones well lubricated

What is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis in the knee. It is a degenerative, “wear-and-tear” type of arthritis that occurs most often in people 50 years of age and older but may occur in younger people too. In osteoarthritis the cartilage in the knee joint gradually wears away.
